Let’s grow your direct primary
care practice
together

A permanent home for your
direct primary care practice

We bring know-how and capital to help you grow

Your practice remains your practice

Timshel Health is a parter-based holding company that invests in and partners with direct care practices.

Timshel Health is not a private equity firm. Our capital comes from healthcare entrepreneurs and family offices who are mission-aligned and long-term oriented. Unlike other growth partners, we are in it for the long term, and we won’t push you to make shortsighted decisions.

About Timshel Health

  • Americans deserve truly affordably, high quality healthcare. Patients should be able to see their doctor without a middleman getting in the way. At Timshel, clinicians are empowered and patients come first.

  • Leaders of established practices who want to grow their practice and expand affordable, quality healthcare at large. They are great entrepreneurs who may not need us to run their practice today but want a growth partner to make their practice - and the direct care ecosystem as a whole - bigger and better.

  • We design every partnership and deal structure to fit the organizational goals and financial priorities of our partners. We encourage physicians to maintain meaningful equity in their practices, and we can accommodate more flexible deal structures than any other growth partner.

  • Unlike a private equity firm, our investors do not expect a sale or return in the near-term. This enables us to make intelligent, long-term decisions and ensures you won't be quickly passed on to a new owner.

Value Proposition

  • We will invest capital behind your practice, including hire top-tier providers and investing in your sales and marketing efforts. We will invest ahead of growth and help you expand much faster than otherwise possible.

  • In addition to running and growing their own practices, our partners play a key part in the strategy and growth of the broader company.

  • This is not a passive investment. I am a driven entrepreneur with valuable experience that will work hard as a partner to you and your business

  • Timshel is a holding company that emphasizes autonomy to encourage founders to remain entrepreneurial and to respect their practices’ cultures and clinical care. We will lean-in heavily to help you grow, but we won’t tell you how to run your practice

  • Timshel will support you with technology, business operations, strategy, employer sales, marketing, and hiring:

I was drawn to healthcare to help people, but I didn’t feel like I was. Across roles with various healthcare organizations, I saw firsthand how insurance does not work for primary and preventative care. Insurance is for unpredictable, infrequent events. Nobody needs a middleman when they want to talk to their primary care doctor or the added cost and barriers that come with them.

I started my career in consulting trying to solve healthcare's inefficiencies with clients at large health systems, payers, and private equity firms. More often than not, we were helping providers rapidly scale, negotiate higher reimbursement rates, and increase margins at the expense of quality. I then switched to a sales and customer success role at a value-based care software company, hoping these programs would reduce costs and improve quality. Our customers would frequently use our software to game the value-based care programs rather than improve quality of care, and the hundreds of metrics involved meant more time on admin and less on patient care. I read the book Catastrophic Care and started talking to folks in the direct care ecosystem, and I realized that direct primary care is the best solution to help clinicians provide affordable, high quality, proactive care. I went to CVS Health hoping to work on some of these direct care ideas at scale. As Direct of Pharmacy Strategy, I tried to introduce price shopping for customers, subscription-based services, and more direct care options through MinuteClinic. CVS works hard for its customers, but they are also limited by insurance companies and risk-aversion, and my ideas mostly stalled.

I decided to go to business school to work on startup ideas to expand direct care, like an insurance plan that used cash prices rather than negotiated rates and an app that helped employees price shop for healthcare services and share in the savings. Ultimately, I decided I wanted to be closer to direct care itself and the great physicians involved in the DPC community, so I started Timshel Health.

I live in the Bay Area but will always be Midwestern at heart. I am a die-hard Chicago sports fan, avid golfer and camper, and love being outdoors with my wife Rachel and dog Fitz.

About the Name

Timshel borrows its name from East of Eden by John Steinbeck. Timshel, a Hebrew word for “thou mayest,” is a motif of the book that celebrates the beauty of the individual and the agency of individuals to choose their own path. We believe the American healthcare system has robbed providers and patients of their agency, and we want to help great healthcare practices in restoring that agency. We look for this ethos in all of our potential partners and how they treat their employees, providers, and patients, and we ensure it remains front and center as they grow and evolve. We bring this ethos to our holding company, where we celebrate the autonomy of each practice partner and empower our employees.
